I know I’ve waxed lyrical about Guildford Cathedral over the last few months but as this is its 50th anniversary year I’m determined to ‘convert’ as many people as possible to the beauty of this stunning building.
Of course it’s a place of worship but, as a community amenity, it’s now available for hire as a venue for charity fund-raising or corporate hospitality.
I attended the 50th anniversary gala dinner back in May complete with disco, and can vouch for the fact that this is great space and definitely imparts a sense of exalted theatre!
More recently, activity moved outside with the summer fair held on the green to the front of the cathedral at which over £33,000 was raised from the charity abseil.
If you still haven’t been to this wonderful landmark, then pay a visit this month to the Surrey Sculpture Society exhibition which runs until the end of July.
This ‘divine’ setting was offered by The Dean of Guildford Cathedral, himself an art lover, who saw the work of the society some years ago and invited them to exhibit in this 50th anniversary year.
The artworks are in a variety of materials including bronze, metal, ceramics, wood, glass, resin and stone.
I was particularly struck by a beautiful sculpture called ‘Grace’ by Juliet Scott: in bronze resin, its simplicity is simply stunning.
There is much diversity in the subject matter from contemporary forms to the more traditional and it’s well worth a visit.
The Surrey Sculpture Society started fifteen years ago with just fourteen sculptors and now numbers over 300 spread across the South East.
Annual events take place at other prestigious venues such as RHS Wisley, Beaulieu and Denbies Wine Estate.
The Cathedral exhibition is open from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm Monday to Saturday and 12.30 – 4.30 pm on Sundays. Please check times as occasionally the cathedral is shut for graduation ceremonies.
