May 2011 Issue

The Elmbridge and Kingston Magazines’ monthly April issue meets with local baristas and interviews Eastender legend Nigel Harman.

Editor's Letter

The month of May has been celebrated for its charms down the centuries.

Children still dance around the Maypole and its sunny, blossom-filled days have inspired countless writers, with the bard affectionately lamenting the lost ‘darling buds of May’ in his most famous sonnet (‘Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day’).

Whether you wish to rejoice at the onset of this most beloved month, or simply get out and about, there’s plenty to choose from in Kingston and Elmbridge this month.

There are events galore – take a look at our What’s On (p51) for the pick of the crop – and don’t miss out on our fabulous competition (right) where you can win two tickets to a concert of your choice at the Hampton Court Music Festival in June.

Our cover star is the multi-talented Nigel Harman, once the bad man of EastEnders, who left soapland to return to the world of the stage.

A veteran of Pinter and Shakespeare, he is taking on an arguably more comic role in the new West End production of Shrek the Musical (p18–19).

If you’re a fan of the bean (coffee, that is), you’ll be pleased to know that you can now learn how to brew your own – aficionado Catherine Whyte turns barista (page 12–13).

If, after all that activity, you fancy a nice snooze, keep your eyes open long enough to read Health (p39) where top tips for sound slumber are revealed.
